History of Nigeria police force
The Nigerian police Force has been in existence for quite some time, it was established in 1820 then it was not known as the Nigerian police force.
In 1896 the Lagos police was established to help the colonial administration. Again another force was formed just few years after the Lagos state police was established, it was called the Niger coast constabulary which was established in 1894 in Calabar.
Let’s not forget that the Police officers were not armed, the colonial government saw no need to arm them but on few occasions history has it that weapons were given to them as demanded by the mission they are to embark on.
The new formations then existed and has it command under the newly proclaimed Niger coast protectorate, let’s not forget that the Royal Niger company came into existence around same period in 1888 which has its headquarters stationed at Lokoja
1914 the Southern and Northern Nigeria became one National with it capital in Lagos, although at the beginning each protectorate maintained its own police unit with their activities and obligations extending to local government.
As time goes on, the new nation saw the need to reform the police force and the focus moved away from regional police to national police force with wider scope of duties such as maintaining internal security, provide support to other sister security agencies in fight against crime and vices that faced every modern societies.
