History
Widely known as Unilorin across the country, the University of Ilorin is owned and controlled by the federal government of Nigeria. It is located in Ilorin, Kwara state.
Unilorin is one of the oldest tertiary institutions in Nigeria as it was established in 1975 during the military regime.
Many events transpired between the first vice-chancellor of the institution Dr. T.N. Tamuno and the then-military governor of Kwara state late Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo which led to the development of the school.
After many meetings and discussions between all concerned parties, the university admitted its first set of students on the 23rd of March 1976. The students were 200 in numbers but there wasn’t conducive lecture rooms for them.
A segment was carved out of the Kwara State Polytechnic in order to provide the first set of Unilorin students a place where they will receive lectures.
During this period, only three academic falculties were available. They include faculty of Art, Science, and Education.
The area created for the students was referred to as the mini-campus, and they utilized the place for six years before part of the university’s permanent site was completed in 1983.
As time goes on, many falculties were added to the available ones, and all the students finally moved to the permanent site.
