Lagos is the centre of excellence not only because of the commercial activities that take place in the state, not just the number of people living in the state, but the number and quality of tertiary institutions it possesses.
You must have heard of LASU, UNILAG, LASPOTECH, National Open University of Nigeria, and Pan-African University. They all reside in the state.
However, our focus for today is strictly on the Lagos State Polytechnic popularly known as Laspotech. History Laspotech is a state-owned Polytechnic which was created in 1978.
As at that time, the tertiary institution was known as the Lagos State College of Science and Technology. The Lagos State Polytechnic began lectures in less than a year after its establishment but could only boast of 287 students during its first year.
The Lagos State college of Science and Technology (as it was formerly called) had just five departments in the first year of its existence. These departments include Management and Business Studies, Basic Studies, Insurance, Secretarial Studies, and Accountancy and Finance.
After ten years of its existence, the institution had a change of name as it was renamed The Lagos State Polytechnic (Laspotech) in 1988 by the then-governor of the state Brigadier General Raji Rasaki.
Having moved from one developmental stage to another, LASPOTECH currently has over 50,000 students and more than 800 teaching staffs. It has three campuses, which are located in Isolo, Surulere and Ikosi.
