History of UNN
The creation of the University of Nigeria Nsuka was first commanded in 1955 while the country was still under the leadership of the British colonial masters.
Though the construction of the tertiary institution commenced in earnest, it took a while before it could be formall launched as an active learning center in the country.
However, the delay eventually came to an end as soon as the country gained her independent from the colonial masters in 1960. UNN was formally inaugurated by Princess Alexandra of Kent on the 7th of October 1960, and the first military president of the country Nnamdi Azikiwe was also in attendance.
As at that time, the university was known as the ‘University of Biafra’ because it is located in eastern part of the country and the idea to create the tertiary institution was largely proposed by the eastern government.
University of Biafra, as it was formerly called, started its classes 10 days after inauguration and it had just 220 students alongside 13 teaching staffs.
Finally, the name of the institution was changed to the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1970. UNN has been developing since then, and it still remains among the most experienced universities in the country.
CAMPUS IN UNN
Apart from its reputation as the oldest university in Nigeria, UNN is one of the few universities that have more than three campus in different locations. The tertiary institution has four campuses in two different states. The campuses and their locations are listed below:
- The first and the main campus is located in Nsukka in Enugu state. It is referred to as University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN).
- The second campus is located in Enugu, Enugu state. It is known as the University of Nigeria Enugu campus (UNEC)
- The third campus is located in Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu state. It consists of the compulsory teaching hospital, and it is known as the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, (UNTH)
- The fourth campus is located in Aba, Abia state. It is referred to as The University of Nigeria Aba campus (UNAC).
