History

We can’t discuss the history of the university without mentioning the defunct Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH). AUSTECH, which was created in 1980 by the Old Anambra state government, was one of the two state universities in the country as at that time.

However, the old Anambra was split into two states (Anambra and Enugu states) which led to the end of ASUTECH in the state. Having split the old Anambra into two states, two of ASUTECH’s campuses (Akwa and Nnewi) fell into the land that belongs to the new Anambra state. So, they were amalgamated to form the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 1991.

The federal government of Nigeria, under the leadership of late Nnamdi Azikiwe, took over the management of the University in 1992, and it became a federal government-owned tertiary institution since then.

Campus

Unizik currently has three campuses. The first and the main campus is located in the capital of the state Awka. It is situated at the Onitsha – Enugu Expressway.

The second campus is situated at Nnewi. It serves as home for the school’s Teaching Hospital, which is why it is often referred to as NAUTH (Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital). The third and last campus is sited at Agulu, in Anaocha Local Government Area of the state. It is deployed as home for the Faculty of Pharmacy.
